Marvell and Osram launch turnkey reference designs

Marvell and Osram Opto Semiconductors announced the Marvell-OSram two-color LED downlight reference design to further promote mass market adoption of high-quality, affordable LED lighting applications. This turnkey reference design is based on OSram's high-performance leds and Marvell's highly integrated, advanced driver ics, which significantly reduce engineering complexity in professional and commercial lighting applications where high performance, high color Rendering index (CRI) LED lighting fixtures are required

     Marvell and Osram Opto Semiconductors announced the Marvell-OSram two-color LED downlight reference design to further promote mass market adoption of high-quality, affordable LED lighting applications. This turnkey reference design is based on OSram's high-performance leds and Marvell's highly integrated, advanced driver ics, which significantly reduce engineering complexity in professional and commercial lighting applications where high performance, high color Rendering index (CRI) LED lighting fixtures are required. It is expected to make it easier for lighting manufacturers to develop higher quality LED lamps and provide them to end users at a more affordable price.

     This turnkey reference design uses Osram's Brilliant Mix LED and Marvell 88EM8801 LED driver ics to provide an unmatched solution for color mixing and control of EQ-white and amber leds for higher color rendering index and light efficiency. Marvell's 88EM8801 LED driver IC integrates a dual-channel driver circuit and a variety of different built-in digital control functions to address complex design challenges often faced by device manufacturers and reduce bill of material costs.

     Joerg Schmidt, Marketing Manager at OSram Opto-Semiconductors, said: "If standard leds are used, it is not possible to achieve LED lighting with both high efficiency and high color rendering index with the current color mixing technology. Eq-white and amber leds have different luminous flux characteristics, resulting in complex design challenges related to operating temperature. "Partnering with Marvell is important to enable us to deliver high-quality, low-cost leds for mass markets such as commercial and residential lighting." "With Marvell's innovative LED IC drivers and our Brilliant Mix technology, device manufacturers can easily develop feedback control systems that compensate for temperature drift for bright, high-performance and energy efficient lighting applications."
