     Toshiba Electronics Europe Ltd. has released two overtemperature detection ics, the first in its Thermoflagger line. The device can be combined with a PTC thermistor to detect overheating within an electronic system and take countermeasures if needed. They are ideal for a variety of applications, including mobile devices, home appliances and industrial equipment.

     The device provides a simple, inexpensive, low-current-consumption solution for connecting multiple PTC thermistors. By combining them with general temperature sensor integrated circuits, additional overtemperature protection solutions can be realized. Two devices have been released. They are TCTH021BE and TCTH022BE, TCTH021BE provides non-latching function for FLAG signal when abnormal state is detected, and TCTH022BE provides latching function for signal.

     The new product has a built-in current source and is used with a PTC thermistor to greatly increase its ohm resistance once it exceeds a certain temperature level. A temperature increase near any PTC will cause an increase in the voltage of the PTCO pin, activating the FLAG signal and detecting overheating. By connecting multiple thermistors in series, multiple locations can be easily overtemperature detected.

     The product comes in a small standard SOT-553 package, measuring only 1.6mm x 1.6mm x 0.55mm. They offer low current consumption (IDD10U) of 11.3μA(type) with the option of PTCO output current. Generally, the IPTCO was 10μA and the accuracy was ±8%. The operating supply voltage (VDD) ranges from 1.7V to 5.5V, and the device can operate at temperatures from -40℃ to +125℃. These products enable users to easily configure overtemperature detection for complete electronic devices without having a significant impact on device size and power consumption.
