The new Cypress Power Management IC helps automotive electronic control units cope with demanding electrical conditions

     Cypress Semiconductor Corporation announced the introduction of the industry's most compact, highly integrated power management IC(PMIC) products to control battery output voltage for automotive applications such as advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), body control modules and automotive dashboard systems. The Cypress S6BP20x Series Automotive PMIC uses a unique single-channel, buck-boost DC/DC converter for electronic control unit (ECU) power management solutions to safely handle extreme fluctuations in battery voltage. This series of PMIC avoids the two bulky and expensive electrolytic capacitors required by traditional PMIC, and uses only one tiny ceramic capacitor to provide a small size ECU power management solution.

     Cypress has also added the S6BP50x PMIC product range for automotive dashboard systems to its portfolio. The series 3-channel output PMIC integrates a buck controller, buck converter and boost converter, and a spread spectrum clock generator (SSCG) in a single chip. The two new primary PMIC series complement Cypress's secondary power management S6BP40x series and Cypress Traveo™ Automotive MCU series, and the new series of automotive PMIC are all AEC-Q100 certified.

     Electronic control units (ECUs) in today's vehicles must be small in size, low in power consumption, and able to support system safety under all operating conditions, including cold start, where the car engine starts at a low temperature causing excessive current; Or the load drop, that is, the surge voltage that occurs when the battery is disconnected during engine operation and is powered by an alternator. The Cypress S6BP20x Automotive PMIC requires only nine external components, enabling a small PCB functional layout and reducing system BOM costs. The series PMIC requires only 20 µA of static current, extending battery life and supporting input voltages from 2.5 to 42 V to cover the harsher conditions of cold starts and load drops. In addition, Cypress offers Easy DesignSim™ validation tools and evaluation kits to accelerate automotive electronics design.
