TDK introduces second-generation six-axis IMUs for ADAS and security applications

SmartAutomotive's IAM-20685HP and IAM-20689 are second-generation 6-axis MEMS IMUs for safety-related automotive applications up to ASIL D, with compact dimensions and a wide operating temperature range, and they can also be seamlessly integrated into automotive modules for advanced driver assistance applications (ADAS). Both IMUs can combine multiple applications within a central unit, taking advantage of motion detection in all six directions

     TDK has introduced the IAM-20685HP and IAM-20689 second-generation six-axis IMUs for automotive safety applications, extending the InvenSense SmartAutomotive MEMS sensor family. Both devices provide reliable motion data for decision algorithms and accurately detect vehicle dynamics in real time to enhance ADAS and safety applications that require higher levels of functional safety up to ASIL d. Both devices have begun mass production and samples have been provided.

     The IAM-20685HP meets ASIL B in all technical safety requirements. It was developed specifically to enhance ADAS applications, for example, to increase the driver's experience while driving or parking. With its compact size and operating temperatures up to 125 ° C, the device is ideal for ADAS positioning and vision systems. In addition, it can be used in compact modules where high computing power combined with small size requires high and stable IMU performance over a wide temperature range.

     Compared to the IAM-20685HP, the IAM-20689 is a safety-focused six-axis IMU with extended embedded diagnostic capabilities. It was created to meet ASIL D requirements for systems and improve safety in critical automotive applications such as electronic/roll stability control (ESC/RSC) and drive-by-wire (DbW).

     While the two components differ in ASIL, they share the same core design, package size, and register map, and include a different set of security mechanisms that ensure real-time monitoring of sensor parameters. Embedded diagnostics eliminate the need for external software libraries to achieve the appropriate level of functional safety. This enables customers to easily integrate devices into their applications.

     "Thanks to IAM-20689, TDK can provide greater flexibility to automotive safety customers by eliminating the need for multiple three-axis sensors in the vehicle." This simplifies the complexity of the system, improves ease of use and opens up opportunities for miniaturization, "says Alberto Marinoni, Senior Director of Product Marketing Automotive at InvenSense, TDK Group Company. "Currently, most safety applications rely on a limited number of axles, which makes current solutions partially blind and unable to collect all vehicle dynamics. Transitioning to a 6-axis solution ensures that no motion information is lost, unlocking a wider range of application possibilities for developers."

     These devices utilize the company's proprietary MEMS manufacturing technology, which provides higher reliability compared to other available MEMS manufacturing technologies. They have all been developed as Safety elements out of the Environment (SEooC) and are qualified according to AEC-Q100 Class 1 vehicles. The sensor is available in a 4.5mm x 4.5mm x 1.1mm³QFN small package with a wet-able flanking option that allows visual inspection at the end of the assembly line.
