Texas Instruments introduces a pair of highly flexible single-chip buck-boost battery charging controllers for 1 to 4 (1S to 4S) designs. The BQ25703A and BQ25700A Synchronous charging controllers provide efficient charging of end devices such as laptops, tablets, mobile power supplies, drones and smart home applications via USB Type-C and other USB ports.

     Texas Instruments introduces a pair of highly flexible single-chip buck-boost battery charging controllers for 1 to 4 (1S to 4S) designs. The BQ25703A and BQ25700A Synchronous charging controllers provide efficient charging of end devices such as laptops, tablets, mobile power supplies, drones and smart home applications via USB Type-C and other USB ports.

     Today, more and more electronic products apply USB PD and C-type USB ports, and there is a demand on the market: on the one hand, as a device, the device should be able to negotiate the highest voltage (5-20V) and current provided by the source in order to charge the battery and provide power to the system. On the other hand, the device acting as the host should provide the maximum voltage (5V-20V) and current of the battery to the peripheral device in terms of one-click copy (OTG).

     Buck boost battery chargers are a good solution to meet this need, especially for devices with single or multiple lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery systems. When the device is charging, if the voltage source is higher than the battery, the buck boost battery charger can lower (buck) the voltage source to charge the battery, or it can increase (boost) the voltage source separately. When supplying power to a peripheral, a buck boost charger can lower the battery voltage if the peripheral requires a lower voltage, and the device can boost if a higher voltage is required.

     The BQ25703A and BQ25700A are single-chip step-boost battery charging controllers capable of supporting power delivery from USB PD and Type C USB ports. It can be applied to smart home, mobile power supply, Bluetooth speakers, electronic sales terminals, industrial and medical equipment, drones and other electronic products. In application, the bq25703A series provides a battery charge adjustment accuracy of ±0.6% from -40°C to 85°C. This high level of charging accuracy ensures that the battery is optimally charged over the temperature range.

     The BQ25703A and BQ25700A are enabled by one of TI's core technologies, the Input Current Optimization Function (ICO). The challenge in many USB applications is that the power supply current capability is unknown in many applications. For example, in USB applications, third-party adapters may not meet standard current ratings; Or in high-impedance, variable-voltage power supplies (such as solar panels), real-time knowledge of maximum power is urgently needed. Such difficult challenges can be solved by ICO technology, which verifies the power rating of the adapter to ensure that it operates safely without overload.

     "The BQ25703A is a crossover product for the first time," said Dr. Wen Sihua, China Market and Application Manager for Battery Management Products (BMS) at Texas Instruments. Previous chargers can only serve the laptop or mobile phone alone, there has never been such a product, using USB Type-C beam or USB PD, can realize the conversion between different interfaces or different series of power products, so it is a relatively new product, it is very significant for TI."
