STMicroelectronics new LoRa development tool
STMicroelectronics introduces a set of affordable development tools based on the STM32 microcontroller ecosystem. The new development kit enables design engineers to prototype Internet of Things (IoT) devices with LoRa wireless Low Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN) networking capabilities.
The new development kit, P-NUCLEO-LRWAN1, consists of two boards: The ultra-low power STM32L073 NUCLEO (Nucleo-L073RZ) microcontroller development board and the RF expansion board (I-NUCLEO-SX1272D) based on Semtech's SX1272 LoRa transceiver. Featuring an energy-efficient ARM® Cortex-M0 + core and unique ultra-low power technology, the STM32L073 microcontroller is ideal for water and gas meters, alarm systems, positioning devices, trackers and remote sensor hosts. The functionality of the system can be further extended by adding expansion boards to the motherboard. For example, the X-NUCLEO-IKS01A1 sensor expansion board can be connected to the development board to add motion, humidity and temperature sensing.
Compared with traditional mobile network technology, LoRa long-distance communication technology has several advantages, such as low power consumption and low cost. Versatile features include multiple communication modes, precise indoor and outdoor location sensing, and native AES-128 security.
The new development kit contains all the tools needed to develop A terminal device that is compatible with LoRaWAN version 1.0.1 and supports two-way communication with Class A and Class C communication protocols. There are two options for device activation: Aerial activation (OTAA) or Personalized activation (ABP).
The STM32 ecosystem offers a wealth of development resources, including STM32Cube tools and software packages, including routines and Hardware Abstraction Layers (HALs). The STM32 product family has hundreds of microcontrollers in different power consumption, performance, package, and price points. Developers can use these resources to port applications to over 700 STM32 microcontrollers, as well as free access to similar IDEs development environments and ARM mbed online tools.
