Qorvo introduces the industry's first 20 battery pack intelligent battery management single chip solution
Qorvo further expands its power management portfolio by announcing new power Application Controller (PAC) devices, the PAC22140 and PAC25140. The PACs are single-chip solutions that offer the rare feature of supporting battery packs of up to 20 cells (20s) in series. These products use intelligent motor control technology to enable intelligent battery management solutions (BMS) to be used in a variety of industries, electric vehicles and backup batteries.
With Qorvo's hardware and firmware ecosystem, the PAC22140 and PAC25140 are highly integrated, saving designers more than 50% PCB space, reducing total BOM costs by 30%, and shortening product time to market. These devices integrate all of the necessary analog and power management peripherals with 32-bit Arm® Cortex® M0 or M4F microcontrollers, and feature cell balancing, monitoring and protection for the 10s-20s battery pack.PAC22140 is packaged with 9 x 9 mm 60-pin QFN and PAC25140 is packaged with 10 x 10 mm 68-pin QFN.
The PAC22140 and PAC25140 have access to many of the analog and digital peripherals needed to manage today's multi-cell battery packs, including programmable gain differential amplifiers, multiple 16-bit delta-Sigma AdCs for current and voltage sensing, and 10-bit SAR ADCs. The single-power 145V DC/DC step-down controller generates a 5V system feed rail that powers the device, while the integrated charge pump charges and discharges the FET driver.

The PAC22140 and PAC25140 offer low-power sleep modes (below 3µA) while enabling longer storage times with push-button wake up, timer or charger detection functions. The integrated high voltage step-down converter powers the system through a 5V regulated power supply with a maximum current of 225mA, reducing heat dissipation problems. The integrated 3.3V LDO provides up to 90mA current for running other peripherals. The mock MUX is connected to the SAR ADC for security checks on the internal nodes.
