Power Integrations' new smart mobile device charger

     Power Integrations, the industry leader in high-voltage integrated circuits for energy-efficient power conversion, has released the new reference design kit RDK-420, a 10 W constant voltage/constant current USB charger based on PI's innovative InnoSwitch™-CH series of highly integrated switching ics. The InnoSwitch IC integrates the primary side switch with the primary controller, secondary controller and feedback circuit simultaneously in a surface-mount package that complies with global safety standards.

     The InnoSwitch IC uses precise secondary side regulation (SSR) and high-speed digital FluxLink™ technology to deliver direct voltage and current measurements over the safety isolation layer. This new feedback technology enables precise control without the need for a large optocoupler, while avoiding the inherent performance drawbacks of primary side regulation (PSR), such as limited accuracy and efficiency and slow transient response relative to no-load power consumption. Other advantages include: ±3% constant pressure, ±5% constant current regulation; Cable voltage drop compensation; Built-in synchronous rectification for increased efficiency; < 10 mW of no-load input power; And adaptability to transformer manufacturing tolerances.

     The RDK-420 is now available for order from Power Integrations. A complete reference design report (RDR-420) will also be provided, including power specifications, circuit schemata, bill of materials, transformer specification files, printed circuit board layout, and performance data for the design of an 85 VAC - 264 VAC input smart mobile /USB charger with 5 V/2 A output. The measurement is based on the new U.S. Department of Energy (DOE-6) and European Union Code of Conduct (CoC) Version 5, Phase 2 USB cable end-efficiency standards.
