On Semiconductor and Transphorm introduce 600 V GaN transistors for compact power supplies and adapters

     ON Semiconductor, a pioneer of energy efficiency innovation, and Transphorm, a power converter specialist, announced a partnership to bring gallium nitride (GaN) -based power solutions to market. Today US time announced the launch of the co-branded NTP8G202N (TPH3202PS) and NTP8G206N (TPH3206PS) 600 V GaN common Source Common Gate (cascade) transistors and 240 W reference designs using these devices.

     Paul Leonard, vice president and general manager of ON Semiconductor's Power Discrete Division, said: "GaN transistors bring a performance leap forward for switching power supplies and other applications where energy efficiency and power density are critical. As more engineers become familiar with the benefits of gallium nitride devices, the demand for GAN-based products will grow rapidly. On Semiconductor and Transphorm are working on new frontiers and accelerating widespread adoption in the market."

    The new NTP8G202N (TPH3202PS) and NTP8G206N (TPH3206PS), with typical on-impedance values of 150 mΩ and 290 mΩ, are available in an optimized TO-220 package for easy integration based on the customer's existing board fabrication capabilities. Both 600 V products are certified to the JEDEC standard and are in production.

     The NCP1397GANGEVB (TDPS250E2D2) evaluation board provides customers with a complete reference design to implement and evaluate GaN common-source common-gate transistors in their power supply designs. The evaluation board provides customers with a smaller footprint and higher energy efficiency than power supplies using conventional devices. The boost section provides 98% energy efficiency and uses an NCP1654 power factor correction controller. The LLC DC-DC segment uses the NCP1397 resonant mode controller to provide 97% full load energy efficiency. This performance is achieved when operating at 200+ kilohertz (kHz) and apparently also meets the Class B electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) performance of EN55022.
