OmniVision Howe Technologies new family of 13 megapixel PureCel Plus-S sensors

OmniVision Technologies, an industry-leading developer of digital imaging solutions, announced the introduction of the OV13A10 and OV13A1Q, the new members of the 13-megapixel PureCel Plus-S laminated chip sensor family. Based on OmniVision's second generation PureCel Plus-S 1.0 micron pixel technology, the latest sensors capture excellent images and provide advanced features such as high-resolution photography, 'super selfie' capabilities, and 2x optical zoom for front - and rear-facing camera applications in mainstream smartphones.

Based on OmniVision's second generation PureCel Plus-S 1.0 micron pixel technology, the latest sensors capture excellent images and provide advanced features such as high-resolution photography, 'super selfie' capabilities, and 2x optical zoom for front - and rear-facing camera applications in mainstream smartphones.

     "The edge-to-edge display of 18:9 screen aspect ratio is a new trend in smartphone applications, but the tight space constraints pose a huge challenge for its design. The OV13A1Q is designed to meet the compact form need of a 13-megapixel camera module, while providing high quality video and shooting in low light conditions." "For a dual-camera configuration, the OV13A10 can be paired with our 12-megapixel OV12A10 image sensor to provide up to 2x optical zoom, giving consumers the image experience they have grown accustomed to with DSLR cameras," said Leland Tsai, senior product marketing manager at OmniVision.

     The OV13A10 is a telephoto sensor designed for dual camera applications. Suitable for small module designs, the sensor can achieve Z-heights of less than 6mm, with zigzag high Dynamic range (zHDR) and phase detection autofocus (PDAF) capabilities. The OV13A10 uses a specially defined main Angle of light (CRA) as a long focal length sensor for dual cameras to achieve 2x optical zoom performance. The OV13A10 is also optimized for dual-camera applications, with features such as scene mode switching and frame synchronization to simplify the camera system architecture.

     The OV13A1Q combines the benefits of OmniVision's second generation 1.0-micron PureCel Plus-S technology and advanced 4-cell in-pixel merge mode to significantly enhance sensitivity to low-light selfies. OmniVision also provides an advanced high-resolution restoration software library for smartphone development platforms, enabling high quality 13 megapixel full-resolution images. With these advanced features, the OV13A1Q is the ideal solution for implementing 'super selfie' cameras for high-end smartphone devices.

     With OmniVision's zHDR and PDAF technologies, the OV13A10 extends the sensor's dynamic range capabilities and fast autofocus capabilities. Using long and short exposures in a single frame, zHDR enables instant high dynamic range preview and video recording, as well as single-frame full-resolution HDR images in photo mode with no shutter delay. OmniVision's PDAF is faster and more accurate than traditional contrast detection autofocus systems, ensuring crisp and crisp images in a variety of lighting conditions.
