Microchip introduces two new versions of the SAM microcontroller series with multiple connectivity interfaces

     Microchip Technology announced the launch of the SAM D5x and SAM E5x single-chip microcomputer (MCU) families. These new 32-bit MCU families offer a wide range of connectivity interfaces with robust performance and reliable hardware-based security features for a wide range of applications.

     The SAM D5/E5 microcontroller combines the performance of an ARM Cortex-M4 processor with a floating-point unit (FPU). This avoids the use of a central processing unit (CPU), improves system energy efficiency, and supports process-intensive applications on low-power platforms. D5x and E5x MCUS operating at speeds up to 120MHz have 1MB of dual-area flash memory with error correction code (ECC) support, making it easy to perform field updates without interrupting system operations. In addition, these families of SRAM up to 256KB also support ECC, providing essential support for mission-critical applications such as medical devices and server systems.

     These new MCUS have multiple interfaces, increasing design flexibility to meet the needs of even the most demanding connections. These families include a four-way serial peripheral interface (QSPI) with in-place execution (XIP) features. In this way, the system can use high-performance serial flash memory, compared with the traditional pin-parallel flash memory, not only small size and low price, to meet the external memory requirements.

     The SAM D5/E5 device also features a secure digital master controller (SDHC) for data logging, a peripheral touch controller (PTC) for capacitive touch, and best-in-class operating power performance (65 uA/MHz) for applications focused on energy efficiency. In addition, the SAM E5 series includes two CAN-FD ports and a 10/100Mbps Ethernet Media Access controller (MAC) that supports IEEE 1588, making it ideal for industrial automation, home networking, and other Internet of Things (IoT) applications.

     Both the SAM D5x and E5x series offer comprehensive encryption hardware and software support, enabling developers to incorporate security measures from the start of their design. Hardware based security features include a Public Key Cryptographic controller (PUKCC) that supports elliptic curve encryption (ECC) and RSA schemes, as well as Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) cryptography and secure hash algorithm (SHA).
