Linear Technology Corporation introduces high voltage battery pack monitors
Linear Technology Corporation introduces the LTC6811, a high voltage battery pack monitor that is a pin-compatible replacement for the LTC6804 and offers higher performance at a 25% lower price. The LTC6811 is a complete battery measurement IC for hybrid/electric vehicles with a built-in deep-buried Zener voltage reference, high voltage multiplexer, 16-bit ΔΣ ADC, and a 1Mbps isolated serial interface. A single LTC6811 is capable of measuring the voltage of up to 12 tandem cells with an accuracy of better than 0.04%. With eight programmable third-order low-pass filter Settings, the LTC6811 delivers exceptional noise reduction. In the fastest ADC mode, all battery measurements can be done in 290μs.
For large battery packs, multiple LTC6811s can be interlinked and operated simultaneously (using Linear Technology's proprietary two-wire isoSPI™ interface). This built-in interface provides electrical isolation and high RF noise resistance for communication (data rates up to 1Mbps). With twisted pair, multiple LTC6811s can be Daisy chained to a single main processor, enabling simultaneous measurement of hundreds of cells in a high-voltage battery pack.
The LTC6811 follows three generations of road-proven battery monitor ics designed to meet and exceed the environmental, reliability and safety requirements of automotive and industrial applications. The LTC6811 fully provides for an operating temperature range of -40°C to 125°C. The device is specifically designed for ISO 26262 (ASIL) compliant systems and leverages redundant voltage reference, logic test circuits, cross-channel testing, open wire detection capabilities, a watchdog timer, and packet error verification on the serial interface to address a wide range of fault scenarios.
The LTC6811 is a pin-compatible alternative to existing designs using the Linear Technology LTC6804 battery pack monitor, with additional filter cutoff frequencies, added passive and active battery balance control, new ADC commands, and functional security against additional fault scenarios. The LTC6811 is fully supported by Linduino™ technology, an Arduino-based microcontroller board and software library. The microcontroller board includes an electrically isolated USB port and connects directly to the LTC6811 demo board, providing a simple platform for evaluating and developing the LTC6811.
