Kyocera AVX has released an innovative surface-mount ground UWB LDS Tulip antenna (9002305L0-L01K) for 6-8.5GHz applications. A new ultra-wideband LDS "Tulip" antenna was fabricated by using laser direct structure (LDS) technology.

     Kyocera AVX has released an innovative surface-mount ground UWB LDS Tulip antenna (9002305L0-L01K) for 6-8.5GHz applications. A new ultra-wideband LDS "Tulip" antenna was fabricated by using laser direct structure (LDS) technology. The process enables companies to create conductive traces with unique patterns and designed antennas on complex 3D structures, resulting in a number of advantages, including significant space and weight savings, unmatched precision and accuracy, and optimized performance.

     As a result, the new antenna can be used as an airborne and ground antenna with an omnidirectional radiation pattern with excellent 360° phase stability, constant group delay and linear polarization - all of which play an important role in signal reconstruction and further improve the accuracy of low-energy, short-range and high-bandwidth UWB systems. When mounted on a 40mm x 40mm PCB, UWB LDS Tulip antennas typically have a 2ns maximum group delay, 4.3dBi peak gain, 2W CW power handling, and an average efficiency of 61%.

     Its superior group delay and phase distribution characteristics improve the accuracy of PDoA, which translates into improved system-level services such as AoA and ToF, maximizing the accuracy of the device's positioning in space and ensuring secure communication with said devices. In addition, given its ground capability, it can be placed anywhere on the PCB, including the middle of the board and on the metal, improving design flexibility compared to strict off-ground antennas, which require off-ground clearance and, therefore, placement along the circumference of the PCB.

     The antenna is compact, measuring 6.4mm x 6.4mm x 5.58mm and weighing about 0.1g, and supports SMT pick-up and placement assembly. It also complies with the latest versions of RoHS and REACH regulations and is optimized for 6-8.5GHz UWB applications such as smart city, mobile, retail, asset tracking, healthcare, fitness, security, handheld and connected operations, including telematics and other iot applications.

     "LDS technology has allowed us to develop a compact ultra-wideband antenna with constant phase that provides unmatched accuracy in ultra-wideband systems that cannot be replicated with traditional stamped metal or flexible printed circuit antennas," said Carmen Redondo, Director of Global antenna Marketing at KYOCERA AVX. "The ability to integrate complex mechanical designs into miniature 3D shapes allows us to optimize antenna size, performance and emission, making it easier for even very small and oddly shaped designs to meet customer and regulatory specifications, and helping customers in various segments of the rapidly evolving smart technology industry to reduce time to market."
