Intersil introduces the industry's first USB-C buck boost regulator

     Intersil, a subsidiary of Renesas Electronics, announced the ISL95338, the industry's first step-boost regulator for tablets, ultrabooks, mobile power supplies and other mobile devices using a reversible USBType-C4 connector. The new bidirectional regulator accepts a wide range of DC power inputs, including AC/DC power adapters, USB PD3.0 ports, travel power adapters, mobile power supplies, and more, and converts power to stable voltages up to 24V. The ISL95338 also converts a wide range of DC power inputs into a 20V stable voltage at the adapter. The ISL95338 supports the USB-C ecosystem and offers buck mode, boost mode, buck-boost mode, and can be flexibly used in any USB-C power management application.

     The single chip ISL95338 replaces two voltage converters currently used in both two-way buck and boost modes, helping customers reduce bill of material (BOM) costs by 50%. The chip utilizes Intersi's patented R3M modulation technology to provide noiseless operation, superior light load efficiency and ultra-fast transient response. Intersil's R3 technology extends battery life by combining the best features of fixed frequency pulse width modulation (PWM) and hysteresis PWM for maximum power efficiency. The ISL95338 is also compatible with USB 3.1 and provides serial communication via SMBus/I2C, helping design engineers program several input/output current and voltage conversion rate Settings to create customized solutions.

     The ISL95338 is fully compatible with the USBPD3.0 standard and supports Programmable power supply (PPS) fast charging, offering bidirectional 5V-20V buck, boost, buck - boost modes. Multiple ISL95338ics can be combined with the ISL95521A combination battery charger IC or ISL9238 buck-boost battery charger IC for simultaneous multi-port USB-C charging. The ISL95338 can also be used with the R9A02G011USBPD controller and the RAJ240045 coulometer IC to provide a complete USB-C power transfer solution.
