Intel’s Technology Contributes to a More Resilient Grid Power Solution
Intel disclosed that its technology is assisting in the operation of the new energy grid modernization solution developed by the Edge for Smart Secondary Substations (E4S) Alliance. The E4S solution facilitates the transition from a closed-hardware, proprietary architecture to a software-defined energy system that is flexible, open-ended, and disruptive to the existing system. Over seventeen million secondary substations facilitate the conversion of medium-to-low-voltage power in Europe. This solution is crucial for maximizing the potential of renewable energy resources as it employs secure, modular, silicon-enhanced technology to digitalize the subsequent generation of secondary substations.
Intel has invited industry executives to discuss technological transformations in the energy sector. Hardware, software, security, applications, artificial intelligence (AI), and communication technology solutions are all provided by Intel to the E4S Alliance. A number of the greatest distribution system operators globally, such as Enedis, E-Redes, Iberdrola, and UFD (Naturgy Group), serve as representatives of the customer perspective that informs the development of these novel E4S specifications.
It is essential to transition to pure and renewable energy sources in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Due to the intermittent nature of energy produced from renewable sources, such as wind farms and solar panels, it is not always possible to entirely integrate such energy into the power grid. The substation’s E4S power technology increases the grid’s adaptability and capacity to incorporate a greater quantity of renewable energy sources when they become available. Carbon dioxide emissions are reduced by the amount equivalent of removing 1,800 gasoline-powered vehicles from the road when the solution is implemented at a single substation, according to estimates by the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy.
Intel has made a commitment to power its operations entirely with renewable energy sources by 2030. At the end of 2022, renewable electricity constituted 93% of the global total. Additionally, the organization is facilitating the transition of its value chain to renewable electricity.
