Infineon has broken ground on its new plant in Dresden
Infineon Technologies joined political leaders from Brussels, Berlin and Saxony to inaugurate a new Infineon plant in Dresden. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Saxony Premier Michael Kretschmer and Dresden Mayor Dirk Hilbert and Infineon Technologies chief Executive Jochen Hanebeck symbolically launched the new factory. At 5 billion euros, the new facility is the largest single investment in Infineon's history.
Jochen Hanebeck, CEO of Infineon Technologies, said: "The groundbreaking of the new factory means that Infineon is making an important contribution to the green and digital transformation of our society. Global semiconductor demand continues to grow strongly, driven by high demand from renewable energy, data centers and electric vehicles. With the new facility expected to serve customers after 2026, we will work together to drive the low-carbon and digital process."
"Chips are the foundation of all important transformational technologies -- from wind farms to charging stations," German Chancellor Olaf Scholz stressed at the ground-breaking ceremony. We welcome Infineon's continued investment in Germany to strengthen the country's leading position as one of the world's most important semiconductor bases. Making chips in Dresden will help jobs and contribute to the resilience of our industry -- from medium to large. These components, manufactured in Dresden, will be necessary for future green technology investments."
Kretschmer, premier of Saxony, said: "The Infineon investment will strengthen the economic position of Europe, Germany and Saxony. The construction of the new facility will secure and create high-value jobs in Dresden, while Silicon Saxony is gaining traction as a centre of expertise for the global semiconductor industry. Over the years, Saxony has supported this unique ecosystem through investment in science."
In addition, this Infineon investment strengthens the semiconductor manufacturing base that drives low-carbon and digital. Analog/mixed-signal components can be used in power supply systems, such as energy-efficient charging systems, motor controls for small vehicles, and data center and Internet of Things (IoT) applications. The interaction between power semiconductors and analog/mixed-signal components makes it possible to create energy efficient and intelligent system solutions.
Expanding production capacity at the existing Dresden plant will allow Infineon to quickly complete the plan and will also generate considerable economies of scale. The new plant is expected to open in autumn 2026, creating around 1,000 high-value jobs. Preparatory work for the new plant is currently underway, and construction of the plant is scheduled to begin in the fall of 2023.
The new facility will be equipped with leading environmental technology and will be one of the greener manufacturing facilities of its kind. Thanks to advanced digital and automation technologies, Infineon will set a new standard of manufacturing excellence in Dresden. The new facility will be closely integrated with Infineon's Villach facility to create a "virtual factory". The power electronics manufacturing complex, based on efficient 300mm technology, will increase efficiency levels and provide Infineon with additional flexibility to deliver faster to customers
