Imagination's new PowerVR Series8XE GPU sets new standards in performance, power and area for cost-sensitive markets
Imagination Technologies has announced the launch of a new family of PowerVR Gpus for the mass market, setting new standards in performance, power and area for cost-sensitive markets. The PowerVR Series8XE GPU delivers the best per-area performance for the smallest chip area and power budget, with built-in advanced features such as hardware virtualization, multi-domain security, and support for the latest apis such as OpenGL ES 3.2 and Vulkan™ 1.0. The Series8XE demonstrates Imagination's continued leadership in the cost-sensitive GPU market.
Today's consumers want their devices to be equipped with the latest features and technologies, and they want them to be as affordable as possible. To keep costs down, many devices shipped today have older apis like OpenGL ES 2.0 built in. Imagination Series8XE Gpus support the latest apis, enabling the best user experience at the lowest cost in the industry.
Peter McGuinness, Director of Marketing, Multimedia Technologies, Imagination, said: "PowerVR Gpus provide significant differentiation and are already being adopted by many popular mobile phones, tablets and automotive infotainment devices. With the introduction of the new Series8XE, we can help chip manufacturers and Oems target cost-sensitive applications and deliver the best user experience with the lowest power consumption and area budget. We believe this is the best entry-level GPU core ever developed."
The new Series8XE GPU has been licensed to several early stage customers for the development of mobile phones/tablets, 4K TVS, OTT set-top boxes, automotive, and wearables. The kernel is now open to general licensing, enabling more vendors to leverage PowerVR for competitive advantage and long-term market success. The XE family of products has been licensed in all key market segments, building on this market momentum, not only the number of authorized customers grew by double digits, but also demonstrated strong business opportunities.
Joe Chen, Executive Vice President and co-Chief Operating Officer of Mediatek, said: "Imagination's PowerVR XE family of entry-level Gpus deliver the right combination of features at the right price for the next generation of connected devices. Mediatek is excited to partner with Imagination to bring the benefits of Series8XE Gpus to manufacturers and consumers around the world."
Ideal for cost-sensitive applications
The PowerVR Series8XE GPU is designed to deliver the best real-world user experience for cost-sensitive products, including low-cost mobile phones and tablets, industrial displays, IoT, 4K set-top boxes, 4K TVS, and mid/low end automotive infotainment systems and trunking electronics. This GPU provides the best experience for GUIs, HMI(human machine interface), browser and email applications, and casual games. Its key performance data include:
● 25% less silicon area at the same fill rate compared to Series7XE Gpus, providing the same amazing user experience at a lower cost
● Depending on various industry benchmarks, the new kernel delivers 60 to 100 percent higher unit area performance. At the same fill rate, the area is 30-45% smaller than competing GPU IP cores
The PowerVR Series8XE GPU also includes PVRIC3, the latest PowerVR lossless image compression technology, and the option of 10-bit YUV video compression in the hardware - an important key to achieving the best 10-bit integration of H.265 in the set-top box and TV. The new Gpus support Khronos apis such as OpenGL ES 3.2 and Vulkan 1.0, providing excellent performance with low CPU requirements.
Security is key
PowerVR Gpus, which support hardware virtualization and Imagination's OmniShield™ multi-domain security technology, are uniquely positioned to help customers build systems where multiple applications and operating systems run independently and reliably on the same platform. To meet the needs of markets such as automobiles, set-top boxes and televisions. As usage patterns and services for various connected products continue to evolve, this feature has become increasingly important - as devices must be designed to support multiple independently running applications, different content sources, and on-site software upgrades from service providers and operators, while ensuring privacy and protection from security attacks for all of these tasks.
