Honeywell's BAS series battery safety sensors
Honeywell's BAS series is an automotive grade aerosol sensor that uses light scattering principles to detect and report thermal breakdown events in lithium-ion battery packs. It detects the presence and concentration of aerosols such as smoke, liquid and debris, which are early indicators of a thermal breakdown event in a closed lithium-ion battery pack.
Thermal breakdown is an inherent safety risk in lithium-ion batteries used in electric vehicles. This is a phenomenon in which a lithium-ion battery unit enters an irreversible self-heating state, which can eventually lead to a fire. The electrolytes used in lithium-ion batteries are highly volatile and combustible. Any form of improper use of a battery pack can trigger chemical reactions that are exothermic in nature, resulting in a self-heating, irreversible state known as thermal breakdown. In the early stages of thermal breakdown, the battery may expel smoke, debris, and fluid. Honeywell's BAS series can detect and report the presence of smoke, debris and liquids. Early detection of thermal breakdown has the potential to mitigate the loss of life and property.
The BAS series measures and reports suspended particulate concentrations from 200 µg/m3 to 10,000 µg/m3 using the CAN (Controller LAN) communication protocol. Their factory-programmed thermal breakdown warning threshold is 5,000 µg/m3. The wake - up output and request - in functions enable low current consumption and high reliability system integration. These products are designed to meet higher quality and reliability requirements. BAS series comply with RoHS specification. The BAS series can be customised to better meet application requirements
