Cypress introduces the industry's first dual-port USB-C powered controller for PCS
Plas Semiconductor introduces the world's first dual-port USB Type C powered (PD) controller. With dual USB Type C ports, the new EZ-PD™ CCG4 controller provides a highly reliable integrated solution for desktops, laptops and other systems. The controller is equipped with 128KB flash memory, which can be used to store dual firmware images for fail-safe boot and improved system reliability. In addition, it supports on-site firmware updates.
The EZ-PD CCG4 controller integrates an ARM® Cortex-M0 processor, 128KB of flash memory, two 1W Vconn field effect transistors (FETs) for powering the USB-C cable, and four analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) to provide overvoltage and overcurrent protection for the system. Integrated electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection circuits provide system-level protection up to 15kV. In addition, the CCG4 contains four serial communication modules, each of which can be configured as I2C, SPI or UART serial protocols.
Ajay Srikrishna, vice president of Cypress USB Product Line, said: "Cypress's highly integrated EZ-PD CCG4 controller enables our top customers to implement multiple USB Type C ports with low system complexity and material costs. The controller supports field upgrades, enabling a new multi-port usage model for power banks, displays and docking stations in addition to PC applications."
The USB Type-C standard is rapidly gaining support from top PC and electronic device vendors for its slim industrial design, easy-to-use connectors and cables, ability to transmit multiple protocols and up to 100W of power. The plug height of the Type-C standard connector is only 2.4mm, significantly less than the existing 4.5mm USB Type-A standard connector. In addition, with Alternate Mode of the USB Type-C standard, it can transmit USB, DisplayPort, and Thunderbolt signals over the same connector.
