High-quality, accurate imaging is becoming an important requirement in a growing number of different applications. Capturing dynamic scenes in light conditions ranging from low to high light is the biggest challenge for this expanding market. Typical new applications include drones, augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR).

     High-quality, accurate imaging is becoming an important requirement in a growing number of different applications. Capturing dynamic scenes in light conditions ranging from low to high light is the biggest challenge for this expanding market. Typical new applications include drones, augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR). CMOS imaging sensors use global shutter technology, allowing the imager to capture images in fast, dynamic scenes without blurring or bending the image. Traditional roller shutter sensors can read the image line by line, so if an object moves within the frame, each line reads the object at a different position, and the image appears bent, blurred, or distorted. Before reading the image for processing, the global shutter sensor can integrate and copy the entire image to a storage area to ensure that the image is clear.

     The new AR0144 image sensor family from On Semiconductor is an example of the latest global shutter CMOS imaging technology. This 1MP sensor in 1/4 "optical format is based on 3um pixels and delivers superior imaging performance in a variety of lighting conditions. This paradigm shift is due to the AR0144's ability to deliver performance with smaller pixels than previous generations of sensors, making it easier to incorporate the sensor into the final customer design with a smaller bare chip size and lower cost.

     More and more applications are using global shutter technology. Applications such as 2D barcode scanners, industrial inspection equipment and professional high-end surveillance cameras are examples of global shutter technology being used to achieve superior performance, as is the case with the AR0144. Companies working on these applications often want to transform their designs into smaller, more portable, and more cost-effective formats to meet demanding customer needs.

     In addition, many new applications are emerging that require the superior performance provided by global shutter technology. The drone needs a global shutter to ensure collision avoidance, and the ARNR headset uses the global shutter to recognize human movement and draw a realistic environment map in 3D space. The 360-degree panoramic camera uses global shutter technology to ensure that multiple cameras can properly synchronize frames.

     The AR0144 has been developed by ON Semiconductor with its extensive experience in this area of expertise and is suitable for evolving existing applications as well as entirely new designs. In addition to ensuring that the memory area avoids excess light and the captured image is clear, the AR0144 has high quantum energy efficiency, can capture more light, achieve a high linear full frame capture, improve dynamic range, and has a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) to ensure low image noise. The AR0144 is available in monochrome for device vision applications and color for visualization applications.
