Ams introduces a new automotive-grade magnetic position sensor with a PSI5 interface

     Ams has announced the introduction of the AS5172AVB magnetic position sensor with a two-wire PSI5 interface for fast and secure transmission of precise rotating position measurement data. The new AS5172A and AS5172B system-on-chip (SoC) are 360-degree non-contact rotating magnetic position sensors that provide 14-bit high-resolution absolute Angle measurement. The sensors were developed as SEooC devices in accordance with the automotive safety standard ISO26262 and feature a wide range of on-chip self-diagnostic systems. This makes the AS5172A/B ideal for safety-critical automotive applications, helping automotive systems meet the highest level of ASIL safety requirements.

     AEC-Q100 certified, the AS5172A/B supports a number of automotive remote position sensing applications, including brake and gas pedal position sensing, throttle and throttle valves, steering Angle sensors, chassis suspension height sensors, exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valves, and oil level measurement systems. With Hall sensing technology, the AS5172AB is capable of measuring magnetic flux density with an array of sensors distributed quadratically in the circumference and compensating for the effects of external stray magnetic fields, providing a robust 14-bit (0.022° accuracy) sensor array and a robust structure centered on the simulated front end to compensate for external stray magnetic fields. The AS5172A/B can also be programmed to support a full motion Angle range as low as 0-10°, providing optimal resolution for applications.

     The highly sensitive Hall sensor front end can also be easily used with small, low-cost magnets and supports a wide field input range of 10-90mT. A simple bipolar magnet rotating around the center of the package provides almost simultaneous information about the absolute angular position of the magnet. Magnets can be placed above or below the device. The AS5172AVB operates over a wide voltage range from 4V to 16.5V and supports overvoltage protection up to +20V. In addition, the power supply pins are protected at inverse poles up to -18V. The AS5172A/B can also be easily programmed via a single-wire UART connection to the PSI5 interface with VDD pins on the device, reducing the number of pins required for application programming connectors.

     The AS5172 comes in two packages, the TSSOP14 package (AS5172B) and the SIP package (AS5172A). The SIP package (System package) integrates the AS5172 sensor wafer with decoupling capacitors to improve ESD and EMC performance, eliminating the need for PCBS and helping to reduce overall system costs. The AS5172A can operate in the temperature range from -40°C to 125°C, and the AS5172B can operate in the temperature range from -40°C to 150°C.
