A multi-layer scanner with 3D Lidar sensors

     The R2300 multilayer scanner has been introduced by Pepperl + Foro. The sensor for 3D object detection uses high-precision Lidar measurement technology, which can analyze four scan planes and can detect and measure the length, width and height of the object, with a high density of measurement. Even in demanding applications, the many innovative design features of 3D lidar sensors ensure extremely high detection reliability and availability.

     The compact and space-saving R2300, with a height of just 58mm, is a 3D Lidar (light detection and Ranging) sensor for optical Angle and range measurement in fixed and mobile applications. The device uses four micro-offset scanning planes generated by a rotating mirror in the sensor housing for non-contact 3D scanning of the surrounding environment. A notable feature of the 3D sensor is its angular resolution of 0.1°, and the company claims there are currently no comparable Lidar or multilayer sensors. Combined with typical laser precise infrared light spots, the R2300 reliably detects complex object structures and contours.

     The R2300 has a measurement range of 100° opening Angle, up to 10m for bright objects and 4m for dark surfaces, with measurement rates of 50  kHz and optional scan rates of 12.5Hz and 25Hz, up to 4000 pixels per scan. These capabilities enable multi-layer scanners to meet the most important requirements in a wide range of applications. In addition, the field of view can be increased to 180° by selectively hiding the area outside the detection field or customizing the monitoring area by installing a second R2300 next to the first device.

     Possible applications for the R2300 include internal logistics, mobile devices and robotics, meaning that multi-layer scanners require an especially rugged design. The pulsed ranging technology (PRT) in the R2300 not only ensures a high degree of independence from object and surface characteristics, but also ensures a high level of interference against external light, high-frequency lamps and optical reflections of the application environment. Another unique feature of the R2300 in the multilayer scanner market is the mechanical separation of the transmitter and receiver within the optical unit. The separation element in the 3D sensor head reliably prevents the optical short circuit that can occur when the front panel becomes dirty, and some of the emitted light is reflected directly back to the receiver element, ensuring that the R2300 always delivers correct measurement results and a high level of inspection reliability, while significantly reducing maintenance costs.

     The integrated E2300 pilot laser simplifies the sensor alignment with surfaces and specific targets during commissioning. It is activated only during debugging and no other tools are required because the visible, red laser beam takes the same path as the actual infrared measurement laser. The R2300 outputs Angle, distance, and reflectance data with relevant time stamps, and the data is transmitted over an Ethernet interface.
