The DiodesLED driver is designed for non-dimmable MR16 lights
Diodes Incorporated introduces the AL8820 LED Driver Converter. The new product is a compact two-stage step-up and step-down non-dimmable MR16 lamp design solution with high power factor, low total harmonic distortion and low output current ripple. In the case of the 6W MR16 application, the device can be paired with most general-purpose LED lamp transformers to support flicker-free operation at 0.9 power factor and 30% total harmonic distortion.
The AL8820 integrates two DC-DC regulators into a 5mm x 6mm SO-8EP package that operates in continuous current mode and uses an innovative control mechanism to ensure a high degree of compatibility with most general-purpose electronic transformers. An internal 40V/2A NDMOS switch with ultra-low on-resistance helps minimize power consumption while simultaneously delivering high output power in a wide range of MR16 LED lights from 5W to 7W.
The new devices offer a wide input voltage range of 5V to 36V and output currents of up to 2A. With switching frequencies up to 1MHz, the device can support the MR16 solution with smaller inductors and capacitors, further reducing the overall circuit footprint and saving material costs.
The AL8820 offers comprehensive integrated protection, including undervoltage latching and output short circuit, output open circuit, overcurrent, overvoltage and overtemperature protection.
