STMicroelectronics launches smartphone display chip
STMicroelectronics uses advanced technology to develop the latest micro power chip. In the future, almost every smartphone or portable electronic product equipped with AMOLED display will use this advanced power chip.
ST has more than 80% share of the global AMOLED power chip market. AMOLED displays have ultra-thin panels with better picture quality and viewing angles than existing LCD displays, and market analysis by IHS iSuppli predicts that as more and more smartphones and other thin electronic products begin to use AMOLED displays, AMOLED market revenue will climb from $600 million in 2008 to $3.6 billion in 2015, and each AMOLED display requires a driver chip/power chip.
AMOLED's power requirements are more complex than LCDS and require both positive and negative voltages. By simplifying power circuit design, ST's AMOLED dedicated power chips bring value to new product designs. The new STOD13AS uses ST's innovative insulated silicon (SOI) manufacturing process to ensure superior energy efficiency and longer battery life. In addition, the excellent anti-interference performance of mobile phone communication noise ensures that the display screen has no flicker and stable performance.
"This technological breakthrough further expands ST's lead in the AMOLED power supply market as display manufacturers introduce the next generation of streaming media processing technology, enabling AMOLED displays to be used in more new product designs," said Sergio Pioppo, Director of ST's Handheld and Portable consumer Electronics Group.
As an alternative to the popular STOD03A, the STOD13AS single chip integrates the boost converter and DC/DC converter to provide positive and negative voltages for the display, demonstrating another benefit of insulating silicon technology. Other improvements include display driver function, new short circuit protection mode and overload protection mode to maximize chip stability and reliability. The new products also have energy saving features that help maximize battery life, such as enabling the Enable pin to completely turn off the STOD13AS display for target applications when the display is not in use; The pulse-jump operating mode increases energy efficiency and minimizes display current consumption.
