ST and YOGITECH jointly launch the STM32 microcontroller Safety Design component

     ST and YOGITECH, the world's leading provider of functional safety solutions, have successfully developed a software design support component with excellent flexibility to help simplify the development and certification process for safety-critical systems based on STM32 microcontrollers.

     The collaboration began in November 2013 and has resulted in the development of a STM32 application design safety manual and a software test library (fRSTL) compliant with the IEC61508:2010 Functional safety standard. YOGITECH uses its patented fRMethodology white-box security analysis and functional verification methodology to create the fRSTL software test library and associated suite of tools (fRTools) to ensure diagnostic test coverage is more accurate and reliable than traditional black-box testing.

     Customers can choose to develop their own software test library by referring to the STM32 security manual. These safety manuals can be downloaded free of charge from ST's website (www.st.com). On the other hand, the YOGITECH fRSTL_stm32 test library can also provide a package of software test libraries that can accelerate the IEC 61508 Functional safety standard integrity Level (SIL)2/3 certification, while minimizing test costs and development risk. Each approach enables the establishment of a safety-critical system that complies with industry standards and is based on a STM32 microcontroller, without the need for a dedicated safety microcontroller with a specified on-chip diagnostic circuit.

     Safety manuals and software libraries support the STM32 F0, F1, F2, F3, F4 and L1 series, which together provide more than 500 products with high performance and rich features for safety-critical applications. In the near future, ST will also add support for the rest of the STM32 family. The System Function (SC3) of the fRSTL software library has passed the certification test conducted by TUV Rheinland in accordance with the IEC61508:2010 functional safety standard. Its diagnostic coverage has also passed the DC fault-tolerant model tests for the highest applications including SIL2 (hardware fault-tolerant -HFT=0) and SIL3 (HFT=1). The safety manual also instructs engineers on how to manipulate test results under other functional safety standards, such as ISO 13849, IEC 62061, IEC 61800, IEC 60730 and ISO 26262.
