Renesas Electronics introduces two new digital DC/DC PMBus power modules

     Renesas Electronics announced the launch of two new fully integrated digital DC/DC PMBus power modules that offer the highest power density and efficiency in their class. The dual output ISL8274M operates on either a 5V or 12V input rail, offering two 30A outputs and up to 95.5% peak efficiency in a compact 18mm x 23mm package size. The new ZL9024M operates on a 3.3V input rail with an output up to 33A in a compact 17mm x 19mm package size.

     Both devices provide point-of-load (POL) voltage conversion for FPgas, DSPS, ASics, and memory used in servers, telecommunications, data communications, optical networking, and storage devices. Both devices are easy-to-use, PMBus-configurable power modules that integrate controllers, MOSFETs, inductors, and other passive components in a single module, thereby reducing board space and material costs.

     The ISL8274M and ZL9024M digital power modules feature Renesas' patented ChargeMode™ control architecture, which delivers extremely high conversion efficiencies above 90% in the vast majority of cases. Both Pems provide a single clock cycle fast transient response to the output current load steps that are common in FPgas and DSPS that handle power bursts. No matter how the output capacitor changes with temperature, capacity or aging, the uncompensated engineering design allows the module to maintain stable operation. In addition, the need for an external discrete compensation network also saves the required board space and material costs. The ISL8274M supports input voltages from 4.5V to 14V, and the ZL9024M accepts input voltages from 2.75V to 4V. Both modules offer adjustable output voltages as low as 0.6V.

     Both hermetic modules are packaged in Renesas' proprietary High Density Array (HDA) package, providing unmatched electrical and thermal performance through a single layer conductive substrate that reduces lead inductance and dissipates heat primarily through the system circuit board. HDA's copper lead frame construction allows both modules to operate at full load over a wide temperature range without the need for airflow or heat sinks. The ISL8274M and ZL9024M also provide several protection features to ensure safe operation under abnormal operating conditions, further improving the robustness and reliability of both devices.
