New automotive linear LED driver
Diodes Inc. has released a new automotive linear LED driver that allows users to independently control the brightness and color of its three channels. The drivers are automotive standard compliant - AEC-Q100 compliant, manufactured in an IATF 16949 certified plant, and support PPAP documentation. They come in a space-saving TSOP-16EP (5.1mm x 6.6mm) package.
Human-centered car design is driving the demand for multi-channel LED drivers, enabling vehicle passengers to easily change the interior lighting color to suit their mood. These drivers also increase safety levels by simultaneously enabling animated turn indication signals and external grille lighting to adapt to different road conditions. The AL1783Q driver has LED current set via an external REF pin, independent dimming control for each channel, and PWM for performing LED dimming. It is ideal for a variety of interior and exterior lighting applications in electric and internal combustion engine vehicles.
The automotive industry tends to use higher voltage tracks to power vehicle subsystems, which has seen battery voltages increase from 12V and 24V to 48V. In response to this development, the driver has been developed to operate on a 55V rail, giving it an advantage over other LED drivers, which typically only operate up to 40V. This feature also supports increased LED chain voltage.
Another advantage of this driver is that it provides up to 66% current per channel (250mA compared to standard 150mA), allowing greater flexibility to support a higher LED current range in a wider range of lighting applications. For added flexibility, separate resistors can be used to set the currents in the three channels.
Thermal robustness is an important consideration when designing linear LED drivers. Therefore, the driver is housed in a thermally efficient TSOP-16EP package with an exposed cooling pad for superior heat dissipation. To improve system-level reliability, the AL1783Q features a variety of fault detection functions, including UVLO and OVP, to detect LED open and short circuits.
