Microcontrollers with extended code flash capacity to support firmware updates
Toshiba Electronics Europe GmbH has strengthened its line of low-power 32-bit MCUS by adding 16 new products with 1MB/512KB flash capacity and four packages to its TXZ+ family Premium series. The newly released devices offer a variety of interface and control options that contribute to advanced motor control functions in consumer and industrial equipment.
All devices in the company's M4K and M4M series, including the newly released ones, feature an Arm Cortex-M4 core that runs at up to 160MHz, integrates code flash and 32KB data flash, and has 100K program/erase cycle endurance.
These MCUS also provide functional modules for the FOC of PMSM and BLDC motors, such as Advanced programmable motor Driver (A-PMD), advanced 32-bit encoder (A-ENC32), advanced Vector Engine plus (A-VE+), and three high-speed high-resolution 12-bit analog/digital converter units. The 1MB code flash in the TMPM4KxF10AxxG and TMPM4MxF10AxxG devices is implemented in two separate 512KB regions, allowing instructions to be read from one region while the updated code is programmed in parallel to the other. This technique allows firmware rotation of FOTA updates using the memory swap method.
The device of the M4K group integrates UART, TSPI and I²C as a general communication interface, and the M4M group also adds a CAN communication interface. Self-diagnostic capabilities integrated in flash memory, RAM, ADC and clock devices help designers achieve IEC 60730 Level B functional safety certification, a necessity for household appliances such as washing machines, dishwashers and freezers. Other applications for these microcontrollers include heat pumps and HVAC, as up to three motors can be driven with a single MCU.
Documentation, sample software with examples of actual use, and driver software that controls the interface to each peripheral are available for free download from the company's website. Depending on the communication and functionality integrated into the device, package options include 87-pin I/O ports for the 0.5mm pitch LQFP100 and 0.65mm pitch QFP100 or 51-pin I/O ports for the 10mm x 10mm or 14mm x 14mm LQFP64. The evaluation board and development environment are provided in collaboration with various technology partners, including the Arm Global ecosystem.
