Analog Devices Inc. introduces low-power modems

     Analog Device introduces the AD5700, a complete HART (Addressable Remote Sensor High Speed Channel) modem IC that supports HART connectivity in process control applications such as smart sensors and factory automation equipment. The single-chip device is the industry's lowest-power modem IC and is fully compatible with the HART communication protocol, the global standard for sending and receiving digital information over analog lines between smart devices and control or monitoring systems. The AD5700 HART Modem IC is Analog Devices' first complete IC product for HART communications and is registered with the HART Communications Foundation as a compliant standard.

     Ron Helson, Executive Director of the HART Communications Foundation, said: "The HART Communications Foundation has tested and verified that the product designed with the AD5700 HART modem is fully compliant with the HART protocol. Compliance with HART protocol requirements is important so that users around the world can easily and quickly access field equipment when using HART-enabled handheld test calibration equipment, computers and automation systems."

     The AD5700 HART Modem IC precisely encodes and decodes HART communication signals in harsh, high-noise industrial environments, ensuring a reliable communication interface. With this device, it is easy and fast to implement products that can be registered with the HART Communications Foundation. The new modem IC is the first to integrate an internal low-power 0.5% precision oscillator, an internal receive filter circuit, and an internal buffered HART output, requiring 60 percent less external support and more than 75 percent less board area than its peers. In the analog I/O module, the AD5700 modem IC adds HART functionality in each channel, which eliminates the need to increase system size and thus reduces board space. The 38% reduction in power consumption compared to other solutions allows system engineers to design smart sensor applications with reduced power budgets, reduced system costs and optimized board space to support complementary functions.

     The AD5700 HART modem IC easily interfaces with Analog Devices' innovative data converter products for industrial applications, such as the AD5755 DAC for analog I/O modules and the AD5421 DAC for loop-powered smart transmitter applications. Analog Devices also developed a full-featured smart transmitter demonstration system using the AD5700 HART modem IC, which was tested and validated by the HART Communications Foundation and registered as a certified HART solution.
