A new series of multilayer varistors with high surge current capacity

     TDK Group has recently launched EPCOS 'new High surge Current flow capability - multilayer varistor series. The series has A high surge current capability that can withstand A single surge current of up to 5000 A in 8/20µs pulses and up to 10 surges of up to 3500 A, with operating voltages up to 65 V DC. In addition, the new SMD element is extremely compact, with package sizes of EIA1210 to EIA2220, requiring significantly less space than linear varistors or semiconductor-based solutions, and has the same performance and reliability.

     The new product uses high-performance ceramic materials and a more compact structural design, which can be used to further reduce the size of the product. In other words, the current density can be increased by up to three times compared to conventional techniques. Based on this, TDK Group has now developed a protection element in the package size of EIA 1210, which has the same performance as the existing EIA 2220, but the package size is reduced by three times. In addition to its compact size, the EIA 2220 element has a maximum energy absorption capacity of 15 J@2 ms pulses.

     In addition, the new durable EPCOS multilayer varistors are extremely resistant to thermomechanical pressures. Even at high temperatures of 125 °C, it also has a strong surge current flow capacity, while products using other technologies will be derated at this temperature. The protective element is designed for lead-free reflow soldering processes, including telecommunications system power supply equipment and Power over Ethernet (PoE) equipment.
